FAA Marks Major eVTOL Milestone with Organ Transport Test Flight

The Federal Aviation Administration announced a significant advance in advanced air mobility today: BETA Technologies and United Therapeutics, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, successfully flight-tested organ medical-transport capabilities from Virginia to Maryland.

The test is a key milestone in the Department of Transportation’s effort to safely introduce Advanced Air Mobility aircraft into U.S. airspace under the Trump Administration’s Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program (eIPP).
“The eIPP gives us a real-world environment to safely test and integrate the next generation of aircraft into our airspace system,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
“From urban and rural transportation to lifesaving medical and search-and-rescue missions, these aircraft have virtually unlimited potential, and we’re grateful for the partnerships that are helping turn that potential into reality.”
In the demonstration, BETA’s ALIA electric aircraft departed Virginia Tech Montgomery Executive Airport carrying an animal organ inside a specialized medical cooler designed to keep donor organs viable during transport. At Charlottesville Albemarle Airport the cooler was transferred to a second ALIA, which continued to Frederick Municipal Airport and then to Martin State Airport near Baltimore. The multi-leg flight was designed to evaluate the reliability of electric aircraft for time-critical organ delivery.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and other eIPP participants plan additional test flights through the remainder of the year.
The eIPP, established under President Trump’s Unleashing Drone Dominance Executive Order, creates one of the largest real-world testing environments for next-generation aircraft. These vehicles are expected to generate jobs, improve community connectivity, and reinforce American leadership in aviation.
In March 2026 the Department of Transportation selected eight projects spanning 26 states to participate. Partners include aircraft manufacturers, operators, and state agencies testing concepts such as urban air taxi services, emergency medical response, and cargo logistics. Data from the flights will help the FAA identify operational constraints, validate concepts, refine procedures, and shape future policy, training, and airspace integration.
